Website
The 1520 website gives young people access to the information
they need, whenever they need it. Updated daily, it gives
young people access to the latest news and information. The
website is made up of a series of databases, making ist dynamic
and easily accessible. Information is categorised under the
Canllaw Online Info Index and is searchable on headings and
keywords.
The main info database contains over 370 information
topics and over 600 links to relevant organisations. Personalisation
means that young people can get access to the information
tailored towards their own particular interests, age and
geographical location.
The Canllaw Online 1520 website was
a regional finalist in the UK E-commerce Awards 2002 and
a finalist in the Global
Junior Challenge held in Rome in December 2002.
The site
has the following sections:
News – daily news, including
weekends and bank holidays, from around the World, Europe,
UK and Wales. This is an essential
section, not only keeping young people updated as to what
is happening locally but it also widens horizons. It also
means that Canllaw Online are constantly screening the news
for any changes in legislation or information, which means
that we can keep the information database updated. Approximately
1,456 news articles are produced each year.
Feature articles – each week a new feature article
is posted giving young people information on a topical issue
such as exam stress in the Spring, travelling in the Summer,
personal safety in the Autumn when the clocks go back and
sport & nutrition in the New Year. These articles give
background information and links to expert organisations
where young people can find out more. Some of these features
have been written by young people. Approximately 52 feature
articles are produced each year.
Competitions – competitions draw young people to the
site and, as the answer to the question is always in the
feature article, to the information. Previous competitions
have included a visit to the Assembly to meet Jane Davidson,
the Minister for Education and Lifelong Learning, a visit
to Brussels with Eurig Wyn MEP, sets of books from Scholastic
and tickets to a summer festival. Approximately 52 competitions
are run each year.
Vote – each week we also ask young people what they
think through the vote. Generally these are linked to the
subject in the feature article, but sometimes they are linked
to what’s being discussed in the media. We also regularly
feature a vote on the Euro. Approximately 52 votes are hosted
each year.
|
Chat & Forum – the Canllaw Online
chatroom is unique in that it gives young people the opportunity
to speak directly
to experts on certain issues. Again linked to the topic of
the feature article, young people have so far had the opportunity
to quiz Assembly candidates from each of the main political
parties weeks before the election, a travel expert from Lonely
Planet Publications, a safe sun specialist from Cancer Research
UK, sexual health experts from the Royal Gwent Hospital and
a Careers Advisor from Careers Wales. The forum gives young
people the opportunity to give their views on what is in
the news, the vote or anything else. Both the chat and the
forum
are moderated. A minimum of 52 chats are hosted each year.
